Girl Gamers

Welcome once again to the weekly broadcast of giant robots and explosions and lasers.  Today we’re going to be talking about the most difficult part of this game, how to finish off the enemy without getting blasted to pieces in the process, and the biggest part of this is knowing how to read your enemy’s status and take advantage of it.

Whenever you’re fighting an enemy ‘Mech, you should hit R to lock on.  This gives you a lot of advantages that you wouldn’t normally have, like the ability to see what your enemy’s weapons are, what their damage looks like, how far away they are and it marks the enemy for your team so that they know where it is and can shoot LRMs at it.  Now all of this is well and good, but we’re going to be focusing on the damage readout so that you too can deliver that final money shot of hot sweet love/death into your enemy. With the introduction of the 6th edition of 40k, new rules brought new life to the game and changed up a lot of things in different codices. Ultimately I really do enjoy the changes that have come about. One such item I think is handy is overwatch. While I do have mixed feelings about the close combat phase in this newest incarnation, I do like that it gives a chance for less choppy armies to survive. Example – Sisters with their preference for flamers make you think twice before assaulting them. D3 flamer hits (per flamer) will give even space marines pause. Continue Reading

So, have any of you ever heard the acronym “G.I.R.L.” when referring to women on online games?  Maybe some of you would know it more from the full term of “Guy In Real Life”, as it is often colloquially called.  It is a phrase that really irritates the ever loving crap out of me, like seriously guys.  The kind of spineless and hateful pieces of crap that use this term really just get my goat sometimes, but of course I do not feed the trolls themselves.  It does not do one well to actually show rage online, but inside it still eats at you especially when one is trans such as myself.

b: the events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual.

If you are a gamer then more than likely you use dice. I’d be willing to bet that you own some dice. I personally have a set in my purse, just for those instances I might need some in a jif (You never know!).

role

Ok, let’s rap for a second, guys.  We all know that giant robots are both large and robotic, and that, in MechWarrior Online, by PGI Games, they’re also just absolutely covered in weapons.  Now, if you’ve been following this weekly column then you know that there are different sizes of ‘Mechs and that different weapons are effective at different ranges.  These two facts, combined with the varying speeds your giant robots can achieve through the use of different engines means that ‘Mechs can serve a number of different roles on the battlefield.

The role of your ‘Mech is primarily determined by three factors: Size, Speed & Loadout.  Since these three factors are really the only variables in MechWarrior Online that means that the previous sentence was kind of pointless.  It’s ok though, keep reading, we’re gonna get to the actual meat in just a second.  The important thing to know here is that your role determines your strategies and how you should pilot your ‘Mech.  Know your roles and you will immediately see an improvement in your game!  Well, theoretically, anyway.
